California was just named the best state in the country for moms’ mental health, the highest grade any state earned.
In those same weeks, the leaders at UC San Diego moved the other way.
In a report to the state, UC San Diego’s administrators put a promise in writing. They told California that when patients have to change doctors, those patients get a “seamless” handoff and a check-in within 7 to 10 days.
That report was due in November 2025, and they updated it again in February 2026, so the promise was still on the record.
A few weeks later, the same administrators told the doctor who runs the Women’s Reproductive Mental Health Program to go full time in about five weeks or leave.
They said no when she asked for more time to move her patients safely.
These are moms in crisis, and many have trusted the same psychiatrist for years, through infertility, pregnancy, loss, and postpartum depression.
Being handed to a stranger in five weeks is not the seamless care they promised the state.
California is moving forward, and the people running its flagship hospital are walking the other way.
We’re asking the leaders of UC San Diego to stop the five-week clock, keep these doctors, and give every patient a real plan in writing for their care.
Helping takes only a few minutes, and you can read the full story and add your voice at brightmotherhood.com.
